Heiligendamm, Germany's first beachfront resort, was developed in 1793 when the Grand Duke Friedrich Franx I was ordered sea baths
by his physician.
Heiligendamm became a most fashionable resort during a building boom between 1793 and 1870 and developed quickly
into an elegant meeting place for the nobility and high society of Europe. Among its most prominent guests were the German Emperors.
After
World War II, Communists in East Germany converted the resort into a sanatorium, and by the time The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, Heiligendamm
was in dire need of repair. After the German reunification in 1989/1990, a group of investors undertook a major program of refurbishment,
totaling a cost of over one billion German marks.
Today Kempinski Grand Hotel operates an exclusive and elegant resort spa in
its six renovated buildings, also including "Hohenzollern Castle and the Palladium-style "Resort Hall."
